There are many restaurants where seats at the bar are as coveted as tables in the dining room. Here are a few restaurant bars and lounges.

7 on Fulton
Elegant and contemporary, 7 on Fulton is a good spot to conduct business (it's across from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center) or have a drink with a date. The bar menu includes shared plates (roasted artichoke, spinach and artichoke gratin) or meals (lobster spaghetti, burgers, pizzas). There are daily drink specials, usually a designated drink (margarita, martini, Champagne cocktail) for $5, except Thursday, when well drinks are two-for-one. Attiki Bar and Grill
Large windows look out onto Decatur Street at this hookah bar and Mediterranean restaurant, but most eyes are focused inside on Friday and Saturday nights, when belly dancers perform. The bar is inviting, with warm woods against exposed brick and the well-made drinks range from classics like a Manhattan to new twists, such as a basil gimlet, with lots in between. 230 Decatur St., (504) 587-3756; www.attikineworleans.com

Belli Baci
The lounge attached to Cafe Giovanni is red velvet lush, and the cocktails are crafted using fresh-squeezed juices and generous pours, making it a good spot for a pre-show drink (It's near House of Blues) or a nightcap. Patrons can order from Cafe Giovanni’s full menu. Listen for opera singers performing in the main dining room Wednesday through Friday. Capri Blu
The piano bar attached to Andrea's restaurant in Metairie harks to Italy with its blue and white interior, scenic murals on the walls and bistro chairs. House specialties include martinis (including chef Andrea Apuzzo's signature Capri Blu martini), Sazeracs, Electric Lemonade and more, plus there is a variety of wines, champagnes and premium grappas, cognacs, brandy and other spirits. Casa Borrega
This is the place for sampling tequilas and mezcals, with more than 100 on the bar menu, and you can drink them on the patio in good weather. The food is based on Mexico City street food and specialties. Celebrating its first anniversary July 4, Casa Borrega is housed in a renovated 1891 Greek Revival house and features distressed wood, funky furniture and art from Mexico, Texas and Louisiana. Coyote Blues
Tequila gets special respect on the drinks menu at the family-friendly Mexican restaurant. Coyote classic margaritas are always $3.75, but there are other options like the Sangria Rita, which incorporates merlot, and frozen fruity versions. There's also a small wine list and about a dozen Mexican and Latin beers. Hermes Bar
Drink a classic New Orleans cocktail at a high table overlooking St. Louis Street or sidle up to the bar in this quintessentially New Orleans spot, which used to be a dining room at Antoine's Restaurant. The bar menu includes a signature oyster Foch po-boy with pate or the classic oysters (six to be exact) Rockefeller. There are 25-cent cocktails with lunch and live music Friday and Saturday. Jaeger's Seafood & Beer Garden
Frozen melon coladas and Jaeger Ritas are popular drinks, along with Abita Amber and other brews, available by the bucket. There's a raw oyster bar and seafood boiled, fried or grilled in a variety of dishes, including "char-grill" oysters. The atmosphere is family oriented and casual. 901 S. Little Gem Saloon
The restaurant and music venue has bars upstairs and downstairs, outdoor balcony seating and live music five days a week. The menu features Southern soul food and the bar menu is wide-ranging, from $4 and $5 beers to a wide range of spirits (including absinthe) and wines as well as specialty cocktails including the Mox Ruby, made with house-infused cranberry gin, Zirbenz Stone Pine liqueur, green Chartreuse and lime juice. 445 S. Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant
Reminiscent of a beach bar, Lucy's is a fun place to spend the wee hours in the Warehouse District, with the fun often overflowing onto the sidewalk. The bar takes a playful attitude with its drink menu, featuring novelties such as A Drink Called Wanda, a pina colada with creme de noveaux — and a fish; and a scorpion in a shot of tequila (you get a T-shirt if you get it down). Ohm Lounge
Beyond the electric blinking and clinking of the video games at Barcadia is the more Zen-like contrast of Ohm Lounge, which has a club vibe and red-lit pan-Asian decor with paper wall partitions, Japanese and Chinese art and a temple gate. Peche Seafood Grill
If you want to enjoy conversation with your cocktails, you might head for a booth where there's less noise than in the hectic main dining room at this James Beard award-winning restaurant. The place is rustic, casual and trendy and the cocktails are playful. The 3rd Ward Rougaroux has two kinds of rum, Nocello and pineapple and lime juice, and you can always get a Miller High Life for $3. Swizzle Stick Bar
Bartender Lu Brow presides over this saloon attached to Cafe Adelaide in the Loews New Orleans, and she was creating new takes on classic cocktails long before the craft-cocktail movement took root here. Try an Adelaide Swizzle or Little Eva (two tasty and potent rum drinks) and join the party — which often spills into the lobby on weekends. Tujague's
The restaurant and bar originally opened more than 150 years ago (the framed mirror over the cypress bar was shipped from a bistro in Paris in 1856) and continues to draw locals and visitors. Order classic grasshoppers and Sazeracs at the stand-up bar or take a seat and try an absinthe frappe or choose from the long wine list.
