New Work: Recent Paintings by Auseklis Ozols; Iron Spoken: Recent Sculpture by Barry Bailey

An artist and visionary who founded the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts more than 30 years ago, Auseklis Ozols has long been an influential figure in our art scene. As an academic painter equally at ease with the figure, still life and outdoors, Ozols has championed the classical techniques on which the neo-realist movements here and elsewhere are based. In this, his first show since Katrina " which ripped the roof off his studio, destroying books, paintings and precious objects " he visually explores the resilience of our Gulf Coast culture and landscape. Sharing the downstairs exhibition spaces are the sculptural works of Barry Bailey, an artist who produces innovative pieces with classical sculptural media. Much of his work is inspired by the human figure, by myth, literature and prosaic everyday environments and experiences. " D. Eric Bookhardt
