Not Your Mother's Sink

KitchenAid develops an efficient in-sink dishwasher

At first glance, it looks like someone has devised a clever cover for one side of a sink to provide more work space -- and that assumption is true. But when you open the stainless-steel cover, which doubles as a cutting board, you'll discover it hides a roomy in-sink dishwasher that can handle the dishes from a meal for four or five people.

KitchenAid's new Briva® dishwasher is 21 inches high, 22 inches deep and 40.5 inches wide, and can accommodate at least five place settings of dishes, even if the plates are large. It has cup shelves, an extra-large silverware basket and two racks; the lower rack can be customized with inserts to fit your needs. It also can hold large service pieces or pots and pans.

The unit comes with a sink on the other side so you can work and wash dishes at the same time.

Designed for small kitchens, full-service wet-bars or regular kitchens where cleaning a small load of dishes between larger cycles would be helpful, KitchenAid's "Whisper Quiet" sound-reduction system means you can wash dishes while you work in the kitchen. A special 2-minute rinse cycle allows you to clean bowls and utensils you've just used for later use in preparing the same dish. It also uses half the water required by full-size machines.

The in-sink dishwasher can run a complete cycle in 30 minutes, half the time of regular dishwashers, or if you use an available high-performance water-heater accessory, it can make it through a whole cycle in about 18 minutes. KitchenAid's special "FlashDry" technology automatically opens the lid of the machine when the cycle is finished to allow steam to escape and the dishes to dry more quickly. In addition, the "SaniRinse" option takes the final rinse water to a temperature of 160 degrees to sanitize dishes.

There are two versions of Briva; prices range from about $1,799 to about $1,829. They are available at Glindmeyer Distributing Co. (2910 Lausat St., Metairie, 832-2223); Comeaux Furniture and Appliance Inc. (415 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 831-1365); A-1 Appliance (1102A S. Clearview Pkwy., Harahan, 734-7777; 1963 Barataria Blvd., Marrero, 349-8400; 775 Behrman Hwy., Gretna, 392-8888; 2801 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Kenner, 461-4360; 1846 N. Causeway Approach, Mandeville, 985-626-5629); Best Buy (1601 Westbank Expwy., Harvey, 364-0411; 6205 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 780-0172); Lowe's (1351 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey, 227-0495) and Sears (4400 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 889-8200; 150 N.
