Surgery patients at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center (2700 Napoleon Ave., 899-9311) are being sent home with a bowl of chicken noodle soup as a way for the medical staff to continue care after patients are released.
The Chicken Noodle Soup Care Package includes a bottle of water and a bowl of housemade soup prepared by Ochsner Baptist chef Mike Shain, whose traditional soup features reduced sodium and fat, skinless chicken breast, chicken stock, celery, onions, carrots and egg noodles. The soup and water follow the recommendation for patients to eat a bland diet following anesthesia. Several medical experts tout chicken noodle soup's healing properties, including the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which says the soup acts as an anti-inflammatory and helps patients heal faster. — Graves
