One Eyed Jacks: Quarter Cool

It can be difficult to locate a bar in the French Quarter free of neon and oversized tropical cocktails. One Eyed Jacks (615 Toulouse St., 569-8361; www.oneeyedjacks.net) is in the heart of the Quarter but aims to be an alternative to the neighborhood's typical bars.

"We wanted to create a space that was different from the standard Bourbon Street vibe," says Ryan Hesseling, who co-owns the bar with Rio Hackford. As a venue for live music acts, theater, comedy and film, One Eyed Jacks offers settings for both quietly sipping a drink and hitting the dance floor. Adorned with red-and-gold hues, chandeliers and kitschy art, the place has a laid-back atmosphere.

"We're going for bordello-Western with the décor," Hesseling says. The bar features a main room with a stage for live performances six nights a week. There is also a bar in the front, and a more intimate bar upstairs.

The venue presents diverse musical genres performed by local and national groups. Hesseling says King Khan (March 15) and the Black Lips (March 23) are among bands booked for this year. Ticket prices usually range from $5 to $18.

Thursday is Fast Times 80s dance night, and the Fleur de Tease burlesque revue performs regularly, usually the first Sunday of each month.
