Meauxbar (942 N. Rampart St., 504-569-9979; www.meaux- bar.com) chef Kristen Essig will be the executive chef at Cavan (3607 Magazine St.), a restaurant opening in the Garden District in 2016.
The restaurant is the newest project from the LeBlanc + Smith (www.leblancandsmith.com) restaurant group, which runs the French Quarter new American bistro Sylvain (625 Chartres St., 504-265-8123; www.sylvainnola.com), Meauxbar and Lower Garden District whiskey haven Barrel Proof (1201 Magazine St., 504-299-1888; www.barrelproofnola.com).
The restaurant will be "inspired by the flavors of the American coast" and will feature "salt- and freshwater fish, fowl and other coastal ingredients," including fried oysters, whole fish dishes and grilled meats, according to a release from the restaurant group.
Essig took over the kitchen when Meauxbar re-opened in 2014 after cooking at the CBD's Ste. Marie, which the group shuttered earlier that year. Sommelier Isaiah Estell, who oversees the wine program at Sylvain, will direct the cocktail and wine program at Cavan.
The restaurant occupies a 1880s home, the Cockteron House, and Cavan will feature private dining spaces, outdoor seating in a courtyard and a front porch.
"I've had family in this neighborhood for generations and my wife and I are currently raising our sons here, so I want very much to be a part of the restaurant community in this area," said Robert LeBlanc, who co-owns the restaurant group.
