Open Studio Days

While Art for Arts' Sake draws crowds to the Warehouse District and Magazine Street, the bohemian neighborhoods of the Bywater and Marigny host open studios during the day. Many newer and aspiring artists live in the downtown area and open their home/studio spaces like gallery shows for the weekend. Since 2004, artist Jose Torres Tama, Andrea Garland and Ze daLuz have organized and expanded the network of participating artists, galleries and coffee shops. "It's more of an organic arts event by many of the artists who live in the neighborhood," Tama says. This Open Studio event is the fourth one since Katrina struck New Orleans and will include artists in the Treme and lower Quarter as well. Artists work in mediums including painting, photography (flooded image by Helen Hill pictured), sculpture, mixed media, jewelry and more.
