Orpheus by Tsunami Dance Company

Rather than a literal retelling of the myth, Tsunami Dance Company uses Orpheus as a starting point in its current production. Tsunami co-founder Kettye Voltz says she was struck by the theme of descent in Orpheus as she thought about the landscape of south Louisiana. Inspired by the topography of the swamps, Voltz, along with co-founder Erin Healey and guest choreographer John Allen of Tulane University, has created a work that is both vibrant and graceful like the murky swamps' Spanish moss-draped winding bayous. In a fusion of modern dance and media arts compelling enough to lure Eurydice from the underworld, Tsunami brings Orpheus to the Contemporary Arts Center. The young company has a distinctive passionate and athletic style that reflects the strength of sports and grace of professional dance. Though both founders and several performers are natives of New Orleans, several have trained and danced professionally in New York and Chicago. Orpheus also features four original installations inspired by the wetlands. Artists Denny Juge, Jeff Louviere and Vanessa Brown created installation "interludes," which link the dance sequences and enhance the overall murky atmosphere visualized by Voltz. Tickets $15 general admission, $12 students/seniors/CAC members/artists. -- Vi Landry
