Our Winning Ways 

Gambit Weekly won 13 awards, including three first-place honors and the Ashton Phelps Sr. Memorial Award, during the Press Club of New Orleans' 49th Annual Journalism Awards banquet.

At the awards presentation July 14, Gambit Editor Clancy DuBos won the Ashton Phelps Sr. Memorial Award for the best editorial of the year -- "On a Roll" (Commentary, Nov. 16, 2006). Daniel Castro's "Change Up" (Cover, June 13, 2006) about the Zephyrs won first place for print sports feature, and Gambit Production Director Dora Sison's cover art for "NOPD Blues" (Aug. 1, 2006) won first for editorial illustration.

Second-place winners include Will Coviello in the entertainment category for "Stages Left?" (Cover, July 4, 2006), David Winkler-Schmit in science/health/technology for "Silent Killer" (Health & Wellness, Feb. 7, 2006) and Scott Jordan in critical review for "Johnny and Mac" (Music, April 25, 2006). Katy Reckdahl won second place for her series "Like a Ton of Bricks" (News & Views, Oct. 24, 2006 and Oct. 31, 2006). The editorial "Calling Out the Guard" (Commentary, June 27, 2006) also won second-place honors as did Greg Peters' Suspect Device cartoon "One Hundred Days of Solitaire" (News & Views, Sept. 19, 2006). Peters also picked up a third-place win for his Suspect Device "Chocolate City" (News & Views, Jan. 24, 2006).

Graphic designer Amy Morvant won third for her editorial illustration for "Under the Gun" (Cover, Sept. 19, 2006), and designer Patricia Quinn captured third-place honors in layout and design for the cover story "They Were My Babies" (Dec. 12, 2006).
