Pecha Kucha Night

The Japanese term "pecha kucha" translates most literally as "chitchat," but the best analogue for Pecha Kucha Night might be a speed-dating session for creative exhibitionists. Started in Tokyo by Western architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham in 2003, the clever, rapid-fire concept — in which artists, designers and musicians each get to display 20 successive presentations of their works, but for only 20 seconds apiece — is now in play virally in 164 cities around the world, from Bogota to Boston and Omaha to Oslo. New Orleans' "Pecha Kucha Night Volume #1" features a cross-section of Crescent City expression: merchandise and multimedia by Defend New Orleans' Jac Currie, aural mapping by Open Sound New Orleans' Jacob Brancasi, landscape architecture by Abigail Feldman, night photography by Frank Relle (pictured), sustainable architecture by ddbNOLA's Vincent Vumbaco and Melissa Vandiver, and building design by independent architects John Klingman and Wayne Troyer.
