Pennington Conducts Study for Seniors

Pennington Biomedical Research Center (6400 Perkins Road, Baton Rouge, 225-763-2500; www.pbrc.edu) is enrolling senior citizens older than 70 to participate in a study to determine whether a daily aspirin regimen can lower the risk of dementia and cardiovascular disease. The five-year ASPREE study is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and will be conducted at 25 sites in the United States and Australia. The sites are now recruiting more than 19,000 participants. To be eligible, recruits must be in overall good health.

The ASPREE study at Pennington, part of the Louisiana State University system, complements LIFE, a more comprehensive study seeking to determine what lifestyle changes can help the elderly remain healthy and independent for a longer period of time.

To enroll in either study, call (225) 763-3000. Study participants will attend two screening visits, an annual visit and have phone interviews at three-, six- and nine-month intervals. Participants will receive $20 per annual visit for taking part in the study. — Graves
