Perfect Smoke Screen

Marvel cooler preserves fine wine and great cigars in one attractive unit.

For many people, wine and cigars are natural mates, and protecting them from the elements is imperative -- especially for connoisseurs whose choices in vintages and cigars represent a financial investment.

Marvel Industries has the solution in a cooler that combines temperature-controlled wine storage with a cigar humidor in an attractive unit about the size of a dishwasher.

The Marvel Luxury Series under-counter wine cellar has a black interior and tinted glass door to protect wine from ultraviolet rays. The exterior can be trimmed in stainless steel, black, white or a custom wood frame to match your cabinets. With the cigar humidor installed, the wine cellar, which is 24 inches wide and 34 inches high, can store about 35 bottles.

The humidor drawer is handcrafted in walnut and lined with untreated Spanish cedar, which has a rich aroma. The easy-to-adjust, snug-fitting dividers in the drawer also are made of Spanish cedar and form compartments that can store cigars up to 8 inches long. A built-in closure seals the chamber when the drawer is shut.

The wine cellar keeps both wine and cigars at the same humidity of about 55 to 60 percent, which Dean Howat, sales manager at L.W. Howat & Sons Inc., says is an ideal temperature for long-term wine storage. The humidor, he says, keeps the cigars in a cool, relatively moist environment, which is just right for them.

The Marvel Luxury Series under-counter wine cellar ranges from $1,100 to $1,500, depending on the finish you choose, and the cigar humidor is about $500. For more information on the units, contact the wholesale distributor, L.W. Howat & Sons Inc. (6201 Humpreys St., Harahan, 734-2102).
