"Our philosophy is for the hair to look natural," says Hillberry. "We're not out there doing punk rock styles. We go for consistency. They're not afraid of what we're going to do to them."
Hillberry and Hanks have worked together for more than a dozen years and moved to their new location on Oak Street last August, after they outgrew their previous shop on Adams Street. They now have eight stations where a growing number of regulars and new customers receive services that include haircuts, color, updos, corrective color and styling as well as facials, manicures, pedicures and waxing from two estheticians. They maintain a broad client base that includes an even split of men and women and ages that range from small children to grandparents.
Although Hanks and Hillberry opt for natural styles, they stay current with fashion trends through frequent training sessions and seminars, particularly with the Paul Mitchell group. One 2 One also carries Paul Mitchell hair care products in the shop as well as makeup and spa treatments by Eva's Esthetics and hair products by Bed Head, Rusk, Wella and Sebastian. The salon is the exclusive New Orleans retailer for Circle E Candles, which will burn from 75 to 150 hours.
The owners call themselves "artistic cosmetologists," which means they add flair to the fundamentals of hair cutting. "We do a basic haircut and then do an artistic style to it," Hillberry says. "We like to make our customers look fashionable, but normal. They like the way they look when they leave."
