Hogs for the Cause (www.hogsforthecause.org), the annual springtime barbecue extravaganza benefiting pediatric brain cancer research, will expand to Charleston, South Carolina, this fall with a barbecue celebration Oct. 4.
Charleston's event will be much smaller than the two-day New Orleans event. It will feature six to eight South Carolina pitmasters in a non-competitive atmosphere instead of the 90-plus pitmasters who participated in this year's competition in New Orleans City Park. The full list of barbecue teams and musical acts will be announced in coming weeks.
"There's such a huge barbecue world out there, and we've been giving grants in South Carolina for three or four years so it's time to get the people involved," said Hogs for the Cause cofounder Rene Louapre. "If New Orleans, which traditionally doesn't have a huge barbecue scene, can support the event, a place like South Carolina will definitely welcome it."
No definite plans are in the works for additional expansion, but Louapre said Hogs is considering a possible westward move into Texas or the Kansas City, Missouri, area.
