Clearing up problems with skin, hair and nails is day-to-day business at Poole Dermatology (111 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, 838-8225; www.pooledermatology.com). Dr. Jeffrey Poole's practice specializes in pediatric dermatology and laser treatments. It also provides standard skin care to adults and offers a variety of cosmetic services.
About half of Dr. Poole's patients are children.
"I'm the only dermatologist that's also a pediatrician in all of Louisiana," Poole says. "There are definitely unique disorders, and there's a unique approach when you're dealing with kids."
Poole is also an expert with lasers, which he uses to treat acne, varicose veins, unwanted hair and other dermatological problems. He has seven different lasers on-site to treat just about any skin disorder.
"There are some laser centers around the city that are not necessarily run by physicians," he says. "Being directly evaluated by a physician when lasers are involved is important."
The volume of time Poole spends with lasers is why his practice gives patients excellent results, he says. Unlike many laser center owners, Poole owns all of his equipment and uses it almost daily.
"Like anything else, you're better if you use it every day," he says. "A lot of people will rent lasers and use them maybe only once a month."
Poole cautions his patients to approach laser surgery with a realistic attitude.
"More often than not, people think lasers can do more than they can," he says. "It's important to remember they're just another tool."
In addition to being a board-certified dermatologist and pediatrician, Poole is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery and the Society of Pediatric Dermatology. Recently he was elected president of the Louisiana Dermatologic Society for 2008. He is the founder and co-director of the Vascular Anomalies Center at Children's Hospital of New Orleans, and he's an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at both Tulane Medical School and the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
