Pop-up restaurants French Pickl'er, Little Bird and We've Got Soul announced new plans 

  Little Bird, a new pop-up from Coquette's Michael Stoltzfus and Meauxbar chef Kristen Essig, is serving Southern-inspired dishes at the Lower Garden District whiskey bar Barrel Proof (1201 Magazine St., 504-299-1888;

  "It's more or less Kristen and myself just having some fun," Stoltzfus says. "We live across the street, and it's really tough to get food in that neighborhood, especially late at night."

  Stoltzfus says he and Essig worked on the concept for some time and figured the slow summer months, when staffing at their respective restaurants was more flexible, would be a good time to debut the pop-up.

  Its debut menu included half of a chicken with bread and butter pickles and buttermilk ranch dressing; Broadbent country ham with peach mustard aioli and ciabatta; pork tamales; and "Southern jars," featuring a selection of pimiento cheese, smoked catfish and egg salad spreads served with crackers. For desert, there is butterscotch pudding with a bacon blondie and Chantilly cream.

  Stoltzfus expects to change the menu, but says diners can expect some type of chicken dish.

  "Our whole idea is that we wanted to do something like bar food, but we also wanted people to also be able to come in and sit down and have a meal."

  Stoltzfus says most items are $10 or less. Diners who order the entire menu will get a discount. Last week the entire set of dishes went for $40.

  Little Bird serves food starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, and closes at midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends.

  Local pickle peddler French Pickl'er ( will debut a new pop-up in the not-yet-opened Shank Charcuterie (2352 St. Claude Ave.). French Pickl'er has sold pickled vegetables and fruit preserves at the Crescent City Farmers Markets for the past year.

  "Basically, what we're trying to do is food that is inspired by pickles, and there's a light French theme as well," says Daniel Boyer, who runs the business with his fiancee, Kelle McFarland.

  Boyer's friend Kristopher Doll, who runs the charcuterie stand at neighboring St. Roch Market (2381 St. Claude Ave., 504-609-3813;, offered the space across the street, which will be home to Doll's Shank Charcuterie.

  Its recent soft-opening menu included pickled egg salad crostini, watermelon pepper jelly-glazed chicken wings, summer agrodolce on bruschetta, and pickled watermelon and blue cheese fermented slaw with dill.

  The pop-up is open 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays throughout July and August.

  We've Got Soul (, the Marigny-based soul food pop-up, will move to the Riverbend in fall, setting up shop full-time inside Carrollton Station (8140 Willow St., 504-865-9190; Thursdays through Sundays.

  The pop-up started in 2012 at Marie's bar in the Marigny and until recently was at Jims in Bywater, which closed.

  Tres Barnard, who hails from Mississippi, says his food will reflect "soul food flavors with classical French cooking techniques," and the menu is subject to change weekly. Past menus have included Southern-inspired dishes such as crawfish and boudin egg rolls with Creole honey mustard, blackened Louisiana drum with chow chow butter and hot tamale pies made with smoked pork, green chilies and corn.

  The pop-up will host a kickoff party with live music for the opening Sept. 25.
