Recent collaborations with Robert Plant, The Edge and My Morning Jacket might have been hard to see coming, but the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) teaming up with John Oates has been a fait accompli since Sara smiled, unexpected only by the most puzzled of crossword puzzlers. As with the invigorating July release That's It! — PHJB's 30th album, but first of entirely original material — the bigger question is, what took so long? The seeds of Oates' two-night sojourn at the Hall were sown in early May, when he and Daryl Hall performed a surprisingly vital set on the final Sunday of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, spanning the Philadelphia duo's 1970s blue-eyed soul ("Rich Girl," "She's Gone") and 1980s radio cannibals ("Private Eyes," "Maneater"). Penning a dozen or so of the best-known pop songs ever will generate eddies of goodwill for decades, and Hall and Oates have found themselves on yet another relevance upswing of late, both together (a new tour, that long-rumored Chromeo confab) and apart: Hall with his "Live From Daryl's House" webcast concert series; Oates with the "Good Road to Follow," a musical travelogue of monthly singles, written and recorded with regional guests. His New Orleans entry is "Lose It in Louisiana," a quintessentially sappy-sweet love song whose live performance can be streamed via the Hay Bale Sessions, intimate backstage gigs from the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival — where, in June, Oates, PHJB and My Morning Jacket frontman (and That's It! producer) Jim James all found themselves covering Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" in a Rock n' Soul Dance Party Superjam. The Hall and Oates: They make your dreams come true. Proceeds from both shows benefit the Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program. Tickets $30. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
