The Treme Creole Gumbo Festival's cooking competition is for vegan gumbos only. That means no meat in the pot, no animal products in the roux, no butter or dairy. The contest is open to festival vendors only, and it's a health-conscious highlight of the neighborhood festival (the winner will be announced at 5:30 p.m. Sunday). It's also the only food with restrictions: items for sale include an array of andouille- and shrimp-laden gumbos and Creole dishes. The festival also features an art market and a lineup of local brass bands. On Saturday, performers include Shamarr Allen & the Underdawgs, Hot 8 Brass Band, The Stooges Brass Band, Brass-A-Holics and others. On Sunday, there's The Soul Rebels, To Be Continued Brass Band, Pinettes Brass Band, the Louisiana Philharmonic Brass Band, the St. Augustine and Edna Karr high school brass bands and others. The free festival is sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation.
