"I pay your salary. I work for the private sector and you work for the taxpayer." — Rice University professor Douglas Brinkley, snapping at Rep. Don Young, R-Alaska, at a hearing of the House Natural Resources Committee on Nov. 21. Brinkley, a former professor at Tulane University and the University of New Orleans, is the author of The Quiet World, a book about the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), and a staunch opponent of oil and gas drilling there. Young had irked Brinkley by calling his testimony "garbage" and compounded the problem by calling him "Dr. Rice." Brinkley further infuriated Young by saying "It's Dr. Brinkley. Rice University is a university. I know you went to Yuba (Community) College." Both men came off looking foolish.
