U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu shares a political party and a hometown with U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-New Orleans, but it was on Baton Rouge turf that she rolled out her support for Richmond last week. The capital city is new to Richmond's 2nd Congressional District, which he's expected to retain.
"He had not had Baton Rouge in his district, so she just wanted to introduce him to people in Baton Rouge," said Jane Campbell, Landrieu's chief of staff, adding the senator has "no reason to engage" in any of Louisiana's other congressional races.
Landrieu has also made endorsements and helped with fundraising in hot U.S. Senate races around the country, backing Heidi Heitkamp in North Dakota, Martin Heinrich in New Mexico and Shelley Berkley in Nevada. "She has done the same for other Democrats, too, in Senate races," Campbell said.
In New Orleans, Landrieu will back Sarah Usdin for the Orleans Parish School Board, Campbell added, but she probably won't be getting involved in the ongoing contests for the Public Service Commission and New Orleans City Council. "That doesn't mean she might not decide to do so if the races tighten up and she is asked to do so," Campbell said. — JEREMY ALFORD
