Rovar17

Want to freak yourself out with nothing but a surround-sound stereo and a light switch? Sit alone in a darkened room and listen to Rovar17 at maximum volume. Kálmán Pongrácz's mesmerizing, truly terrifying noise project, in the Budapest native's own succinct words: "First step: creation. We create some artificial organisms. Because we haven't got a pure laboratory, and we can't groom the test tubes and instruments, the generated living beings are black-hearted. Second step: sampling. We investigate the evil beings and make video and audio recordings of their behavior. Eventually, "finds" are presented live to the audience." Pongrácz calls these finds "insects" ("rovar" in Hungarian), and it's a fitting descriptor for the sonic creatures he lets loose. In these scarily lifelike electronic sounds, you can practically feel the antennae flicking, mandibles clicking and spiny legs rubbing together as they scamper from channel to channel, pausing in between to vent ear-piercing shrieks and unsettling wails. Rovar17 performs Tuesday at the AllWays Lounge with local jazz masters Larry Sieberth (keys), James Singleton (bass) and Rick Trolsen (trombone), and Wednesday at Zeitgeist with Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel (exactly and nothing like it sounds).
