A haircut performed by a rushed stylist can leave you with locks that are, at best, slightly uneven and at worst, cause for distress. At Salon M (4336 Canal St., 304-6525), owner and stylist Lisa Marquette strives to create an atmosphere that is welcoming and attentive to the needs of individual clients.
"We never want our guests to feel rushed," Marquette says. "We wanted to create a relaxed, unique space that is inviting."
Salon M is housed in a Victorian cottage in Mid-City that suffered significant damage from Katrina. Marquette and her husband Dennis purchased the property and completely renovated it. "We wanted the space to be our contribution to the rebuilding process," Marquette says. The result is a brightly lit, cozy salon with hardwood floors and a spacious waiting area stocked with bottled water, coffee and pastries.
Salon M offers haircuts, color treatments and styling. Haircuts start at $40 for women and $25 for men, and it's one of two salons in the area that uses Bumble and Bumble products. The salon specializes in corrective coloring and treating damaged hair. It also offers manicures (starting at $20) and pedicures (starting at $35).
For Marquette, who has worked as a stylist for 15 years, cutting hair for a living is a gift: "It's my talent and my passion. For me, it's an escape."
