Saving Babies

The New Orleans Health Department has been awarded a grant to help lower the city's infant mortality rate (IMR) from the 7.6 percent recorded in Orleans Parish in 2007 — and especially the 8.9 percent among African-Americans.

The grant from CityMatCH, the Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs and the National Healthy Start Association, will pay for four members of the city health department to attend three meetings of the Action Learning Collaborative (ALC) next summer, ongoing technical assistance from ALC staff, and the implementation of a plan to address racial disparities in infant mortality.
