Shaolin Legacy Show: Journey to the East

In the United States, appreciation of Kung Fu the martial art has been catching up with the Kung Fu the exotic and kitschy pop cultural reference, made ironic and cool at the same time by people like Quentin Tarantino in movies like Pulp Fiction, and echoed in his appropriation of Japanese martial arts in Kill Bill. But here's an opportunity to see masters of the discipline direct from China's Shaolin Temple in the Shaolin Legacy Show: Journey to the East. The almost mythologized Shaolin Temple Warrior team, led by international grand master Shi Deyang, will perform in this program along with students in the local Liu Institute, led by grand master Shi Deru. The performance presents a story about mastering the martial art and exhibits top students' mastery of its mental, physical and spiritual dimensions. The show highlights fighting skills and acrobatics that are both exceptionally physically demanding and as graceful as dance. China Central Television will record and broadcast the program in China and to millions of viewers worldwide. Some of the proceeds will benefit St. Jude's Children's Hospital and a Gulf Coast Disaster Relief Scholarship. Tickets $15-$100. -- Will Coviello
