Shooter Jennings

It's true that Shooter's the scion of country royalty -- and he looks so much like his dad, circa his 1970s Highwaymen days, that his brief appearance as Waylon in the Oscar-winning Walk the Line was almost creepy -- but to file him away as Outlaw Jr., would be dismissive. What he does have, though, is his dad's iconoclastic fearlessness and energy, which comes through loud and clear on his sophomore album for Universal South. Interestingly, the 2006 release Electric Rodeo was recorded before Put the "O" Back in Country, his 2005 debut. The earlier release was exactly the kind of vintage-style outlaw country you'd expect from a man whose upbringing was soaked in Nashville mythology, and included cameos from Hank Jr. and George Jones. Electric Rodeo, though, is Jennings' real explosion; intense, raw and often wickedly funny, it gives genre-bending nods to classic Southern party rock, country and blues. Country Fried opens. Tickets $12-$15. -- Alison Fensterstock
