by Kara NelsonA Hammond-based import furniture company has just opened a New Orleans store: Discoveries Furniture and Finds (318 N. Rampart St., 569-0310; www.discoveriesfurnitureandfinds.com). Owner Scott McKearn travels to China and India to handpick antiques, one-of-a-kind pieces and unique designs that he sells to his customers at direct-import prices. Because McKean imports the furniture directly — skipping the wholesaler markup — prices can be lower than expected. Plans are underway for a grand opening event in June.
A regular vendor at Crescent City Farmers Market events, Bittersweet Confections (484-0780; www.bittersweetconfections.com) now has a location in Lakeview at 5331 Canal Blvd., next to Helm Paint. Open Monday-Saturday, the shop offers 18 different varieties of handmade chocolate truffles — from bananas Foster and créme brulee to mango and passion fruit — as well as handmade caramels, cookies, roca and chocolate-dipped strawberries.
