Shoptalk

Shoptalk Resale Regalia By Lee Cutrone The Encore Shop helps locals look their best while supporting the cultural fabric of New Orleans. Vintage and resale clothing stores are hot shopping spots these days. But the savviest locals have known that for years. This month, Encore Shop (7814 Maple St., 861-9028), the well-known ladies' resale clothing shop owned and operated by Symphony Volunteers Inc., is celebrating its 40th year in business. The Encore Shop was founded as a way to help support the musicians of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), and for four decades it's done exactly that. One-hundred percent of the profits from the shop go directly to the LPO, the only musician-owned orchestra in the United States.

'We're blessed with such a huge fan base," says Darleen Carlisle, chairman of the shop's Fall Into Fashion fundraiser. 'Some people come in because the shoes are so fabulous, or for a great pair of pants, or a little top or a St. John skirt or suit. We appeal to such a broad range of people, and we really take pride in that."

Encore Shop offers women a way to dress in quality designer names at a fraction of what they cost new. After Katrina, women needed to rebuild their wardrobes without spending a lot of money, and Encore responded by reopening as quickly as possible.

'You could feel good knowing that you were helping people replace things, but also that you were helping musicians who so desperately need the funding," says Carlisle. The boutique's inventory regularly includes brands like Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Talbots, Anne Klein and Liz Claiborne. Ultra-luxe names like Chanel and Prada, and some new fashions from Maple Street boutiques are also part of the mix.

For Encore's second annual Fall Into Fashion event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, generous fashionistas (including local celebs Mary Landrieu, Chris Owen, Becky Allen and Olivia Manning) have donated Chanel suits, Ferragamo shoes and vintage Mignon Faget jewelry. There also will be a silent auction (an Hermes scarf and jewelry from Friend & Company and Mignon Faget are among the offerings), wine and 'Mozartinis" provided by Glaser Distributors, food from several local restaurants and music by members of the LPO. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Call 861-9028 for more information.
