Sky High (PG)

If John Hughes had directed a lost episode of Teen Titans, it might have played out something like this late-summer superhero offering from Disney. The power couple of Commander Stronghold (Kurt Russell) and Jetstream (Kelly Preston) have just one son, Will, and he's reached the age where he should be stepping into Dad's silver knee-high boots. But he's got two big problems: He hasn't yet acquired any superpowers and he's facing his first day of superhero high school. For any teenager, the social stratification of high school is far worse than any motley gang of supervillains. Sky High is no exception. The social rankings become clear the first day of school, when a gym coach (Bruce Campbell) divides the freshman class into heroes (those who can throw cars or light themselves on fire) and sidekicks (those who can melt into puddles or transform themselves into little guinea pigs). Sky High soars up and away thanks to clever dialogue and sly casting including Lynda Carter as Sky High's principal and Cloris Leachman as the school nurse. And who can resist seeing Russell once again suiting up in goofy clothes for a Disney flick?
