Sonny Landreth at The Square

If you haven't made it downtown after work on Wednesdays for the Downtown Development District's (DDD) free concerts, your opportunities are dwindling. This would be a good week to break the streak as slide guitarist Sonny Landreth is on the bill. Before making a name for himself with a trio of '90s albums, Landreth put together The Goners, the band that filled out John Hiatt's well-received '80s albums. Since Katrina, he has been busy with an odd range of projects -- from doing session work on Irma Thomas' most recent CD to playing Bach on guitar in an appearance with the Acadiana Symphony to recording Randy Newman's song about a previous flooding tragedy, "Louisiana 1927," for a benefit album. In June and August, he'll join Jimmy Buffett for a few shows. Catch him in the Square while he's doing his signature picking and sliding thing. Sponsored by the DDD and Young Leadership Council, the Wednesday evening concerts have been filling Lafayette Square Park between St. Charles Avenue and Camp Street near Gallier Hall. The Robert Fortune Band opens. Food and drink are available in the Square and support the free concerts. The Chee-Weez close out the series on June 21. -- Will Coviello
