South Pacific

Rivertown Repertory Theatre presents the Tony Award-winning classic, directed by Gary Rucker (pictured). This Rodgers & Hammerstein musical is often considered one of the best musicals of all time after it premiered on Broadway in 1949. It's based on two short stories from James Michener's book Tales of the South Pacific, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948. The musical is set in an island paradise during World War II and involves two parallel loves stories, with the relationships threatened by prejudice and war. It has been presented in many forms, from film to even a television version that starred New Orleans' own Harry Connick Jr. Here it is played by local actors and features some notable songs including "Some Enchanted Evening," "There Is Nothing Like a Dame" and "Younger Than Springtime." Tickets $25 for adults, $22 seniors/students, $12 kids ages 6-12; $18 for pre-performance buffet served by Messina's. -- Samuel H. Winston 8 p.m. Fri.-Sat., May 5-6; 2:30 p.m. Sun., May 7; Thursdays-Sundays through May 28
