'We're strictly into sterling," owner Duncan Cox says. And he knows his silver. Cox's family has been in the silver business since 1975, when As You Like It first opened its doors. He has worked in the shop since 1988.
The silver boutique sells a variety of sterling goods, including jewelry, fleur de lis gift pieces and specialty products for babies. The store's hallmark, however, is sterling dining patterns.
'We sell American sterling flatware and hollowware," Cox says. 'Everyone asks what hollowware is. It's anything hollow in form, like bowls, cups or vases."
As You Like It carries a large array of patterns from respected silverware producers such as Wallace Silversmiths, Gorham Silversmiths, Tiffany & Co., S. Kirk & Sons Silversmiths, Towle Silversmiths, Reed & Barton and International Silver Co.
'We have a huge inventory of different patterns, literally hundreds and hundreds in stock," Cox says. 'Most stores only have a few. That's what sets us apart."
If for some reason As You Like It doesn't have what you're looking for, Cox will find the item and special-order it. 'We're very customer oriented," he says. 'If a customer wants something special, we'll help them search for it."
In addition to selling silver, As You Like It repairs sterling goods and engraves just about any silver product. Cox and his team also can help confused customers identify the maker and pattern of antique pieces and offer advice about how to care for silver goods.
As You Like It also buys silver products, especially old, patterned flatware, goblets, tea services and candelabras. The store conducts a lot of its business through its Web site, which allows customers to choose from some of the most popular patterns that are always in stock and order what they want. It also gives customers access to the inventory in the New Orleans shop as well as a sister store in Natchez, Miss.
