Steve Eck and the Midnight Still with the Dirt Daubers

Steve Eck (pictured) wants you to steal his new album. He's practically daring you. It's sitting right there, unattended, at the top of the "recent releases" list at Drag It Out, Burn It Down, eight tracks of boozy, bleary-eyed singer/songwriter brilliance, free for the taking just like the rest of Rock Proper's online catalog. But be forewarned: There's more than a twinge of guilt that comes in lifting something as inspired as this. The feeling starts with "Drag It Out" — a baritonal warning-shot blues piece that's part Nick Cave spelunking, part Harlan T. Bobo commiserating — and becomes full-on pangs with "Just Let Us Rest," on which the former Amerigo bassist unleashes caterwauling pleas for inner peace to a deaf-eared Jesus. At this rare Circle Bar appearance, all freeloading downloaders owe him a drink. The Dirt Daubers, country/family band of Legendary Shack Shaker Colonel J.D. Wilkes, headlines. Tickets $5. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
