Street of Crocodiles

The Tsunami Dance Company is at least the third interpretive body to tackle Bruno Schulz's 1934 collection of semiautobiographical, Polish-language short stories. Tsunami's version follows an experimental production by the British theater company Complicite in 1992 and a darkly inspired short film by stop-motion animators the Brothers Quay in 1986. Schulz's debut work, originally published as Sklepy Cynamonowe (which translates to 'Cinnamon Shops"), lends itself to such open-ended adaptation. Its stories paint abstract pictures of an exotic, attic-kept aviary and existential human conundrums through the eyes of a child. Tsunami's modern-dance take on the project is equally fluid, nodding to Schulz's dreamlike vibe by marrying its own visceral stage style to the visual talents of area artists Denny Juge, Jeff Louviere and Vanessa Brown, whose cerebral images will accompany the kinetic live action. Kettye Voltz and Erin Healan direct Cristine Barona, Michaela Cannon, Jeffrey Gunshol, Tierney St. John and others. Tickets $18 general admission, $15 students/seniors. — Noah Bonaparte Pais
