Street Psalms

One of the great, though intriguing, challenges in theater is making the works of William Shakespeare relevant in a contemporary context. Not that it's impossible; Shakespeare's words are as relevant today as they were way back when. Still, the challenge remains to get younger generations excited about his sometimes-complicated structures of verse. Hence this idea, first hatched at last year's Black Theatre Festival, in which the Bard's poetry is combined with modern urban poetry and performed onstage. The ultimate goal, says director Tony Molina (currently performing in the title role of Othello), is to present the performance to middle and high schools in coordination with The Shakespeare Festival at Tulane's educational outreach program, Shakespeare on the Road. Actors Sharon London and Sean Patterson will be joined by "poets" Evan Cleaver, Ty Hosler, Michael Santora and Christopher M. Williams. Tickets $12 adults, $10 students/teachers/seniors/children.

7:30 p.m. Tuesday-Wednesday, July 19-20; through July 27
