Streetcar Accessibility

At the first major mayoral debate, held last week at Xavier University, 23-year-old student and comedian Jonah Bascle managed to make an impression with his focus on one issue: making the St. Charles streetcar line more accessible to the disabled. Bascle, who uses a wheelchair and has a video on his Web site documenting the impossibility for wheelchair users to board the old green streetcars, has petitioned the city unsuccessfully to run a few of the red Canal Street streetcars, which have wheelchair lifts, on the St. Charles route — a common-sense solution that would cost nothing, he says. The Xavier audience applauded his stance, and after the debate several candidates made a point of seeking out Bascle. He is given little chance to win the mayor's job, but Bascle got attention for his idea from the major candidates. — Kevin Allman
