The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has been without a public information officer (PIO) since Remi Braden left last April. The city finally advertised to fill the position in July, but after last week's embarrassing NOPD snafu during which an officer shot a man during a traffic stop but the department failed to notify the public, a quick switch was made. NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said a press release about the officer-involved shooting had been drafted but had not gone out.
Tyler Gamble, who has served as Mayor Mitch Landrieu's press secretary, was made acting PIO for the NOPD. Garnesha Crawford, Landrieu's director of communications, now becomes the mayor's point person for the press.
