Tales of the Sisters Kane : Narrative Doll Photographs by Christy Kane

Suddenly, it seems we are in a new age of multi-talented savants, artist-musician-photographers whose restless talents cause them to push the boundaries, going so far as to create new life forms. First the mutant photographs of Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh turn up at Art Noir, and now a new series of droll doll photographs by the Hazard County Girls' Christy Kane appears at Poet's Gallery. Kane makes the dolls herself, but denies any responsibility for the colorful troubles that beset them thereafter, opting instead to photograph their travails as cautionary tales illustrating the perils of intemperance, wrong choices and pique. So here we encounter the hapless Callalilly, "whose unchecked temper doomed her to becoming a hook-handed piano player," among others that include the peg-legged Hyacinth, whose photographic foibles offer no end of fodder for reflection. -- D. Eric Bookhardt
