Teenage Prayers

The title of its new album, Everyone Thinks You're the Best, says everything about how the world's been treating New York City's Teenage Prayers. None other than soul legend Solomon Burke went into the studio with the band to produce its rocked-up, gospel-tinged cover of his tearjerking ballad 'Goodbye Baby" for the self-released debut Ten Songs. For the new release, which drops this week, the Dream Syndicate's Steve Wynn took the producer's chair. The leap from one associated star to the other may seem odd, but it perfectly illuminates the band's striking and disparate style: part '70s art rock with poetic, image-rich stream-of-consciousness lyrics shot through with an infusion of Memphis soul keyboards a la Booker T. & the MG's, plus plenty of Brill Building-style doo-wahs and sha-la-las roughed up with a punk edge and singer Tim Adams' strangled vocals. Alana Amram, daughter of the Beat music man David Amram, opens with her country-pop act the Rough Gems. Sissy Wish also opens. Tickets $5. — Alison Fensterstock
