Tell Their Story

New Orleans had no shortage of heroes during the flood, and the challenge of rebuilding has brought forth a whole new batch. In an effort to recognize those who may have been passed over, Southern Comfort presents the SoCo Start Things Up Awards, an essay contest focusing on "the positive spirit to move New Orleans forward." Up to six winners will receive $500 in addition to a $500 donation to the Habitat for Humanity Musicians' Village in their name. The essays should describe how a person displayed courage, hope, and energy in trying to "start things up" in New Orleans within the last year. Entries will be judged on readability and creativity. SoCo seeks to reward the same pioneering spirit that drove Martin Wilkes Heron to found the brand in New Orleans in 1874. "This is one small way of recognizing the grass-roots people who have been overlooked, who represent the energetic spirit of the city." SoCo has just produced a documentary profiling several local musicians who have returned to the city after Hurricane Katrina and is marketing the movie to theaters nationwide. Apply for the essay contest online at http://www.southerncomfort.com -- Daniel Castro
