Santo Tequila Co. (16 W. Airline Highway, Kenner, 504-305-2762; www.facebook.com/santotequilaco) recently opened near the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport and serves Mexican food made from scratch.
"You'll find tacos like at any other Mexican restaurant, or enchiladas, or guacamole, but what we do different here is that everything we do is fresh," says owner Christian Amaya. "We cook all our salsas in the morning and make guacamole in small batches throughout the day. The sauces for the enchiladas, the green sauce and the red sauce, we make it from scratch." Amaya's brother Erick, a pastry chef in Mexico, helped craft the recipes and menu.
Aside from the chips, nothing at the restaurant is deep-fried. Amaya says he hopes Santo Tequila Co. will help him "bring tequila and Mexican food to the next step."
"People tend to think of tequila as strong, something to make you drunk and that's it," he says. "But people are now learning that it's a nice drink that you can sip like wine, so that's why I wanted tequila to be a big focus of my restaurant. People think Mexican food is big plates, greasy and a lot of calories, but that's not typical Mexican cuisine. In Mexico, dishes are small and proportionate and the food is healthy and made from scratch."
Santo Tequila Co. is open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
