New Orleans' art community
is again being lauded by American Style magazine, which named New Orleans among the top 25 art destinations in the country for the fourth year in a row. The magazine placed the Big Easy at No. 9, citing as its artistic highlights the New Orleans Museum of Art, Royal Street, Julia Street, the Contemporary Arts Center, White Linen Night, Art for Art's Sake and the Edgar Degas House.
Entergy Inc. and the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL)
are donating $225,000 to help fund programs aimed at improving teacher education and offering new instruction to veteran classroom teachers. The money is distributed through the Entergy Charitable Foundation and CABL's Forum for Education Excellence, and will support teacher training programs in six Louisiana universities.
New Orleans Levee Board President James Huey
ordered a freakish undercover probe of radio talk show personality and Levee Board critic Robert Namer, funding it with taxpayer money to the tune of $45,000. The investigation, which lasted from 1997 to 1998, included video surveillance of Namer and extensive background checks into his private and public dealings.
