The Tulane Cancer Research Center, recipient of this year's annual NFL Gridiron Glamour charity fashion show, showed such an impressive level of enthusiasm and commitment in organizing and selling tables for the pre-Super Bowl event that the show's sponsor, the HollyRod Foundation, has decided to give the cancer center 20 to 30 percent of all future NFL Gridiron Glamour shows. The fundraising event usually sponsors a charity in the Super Bowl's host city.
State Farm Insurance is partnering with Xavier University to develop a community center that would offer counseling, tutoring, computer training and career skills. The Xavier/State Farm Community Center would also give Xavier education majors experience in teaching and tutoring. State Farm is donating a historic building on Marigny Street, $150,000 for renovation, and office furniture and equipment.
Michael J. Savant, the former Evangeline Parish prison warden, received a two-year jail term, probation and a $2,500 fine after admitting he used his authority to force inmates' relatives to have sex with him. Savant pleaded guilty to two counts of malfeasance in office. He admitted coercing inmates' relatives into sexual acts by threatening to revoke the inmates' privileges if they refused, or promising special favors for the inmates if they complied.
