Dr. William Bertrand ,
a Wisner Professor of Public Health at Tulane University and executive director of Tulane's Payson Center for International Development and Technology Transfer, donated more than 70 pieces of original African art to the New Orleans African American Museum of Art, Culture and History. The artworks, collected during Bertrand's travels and his former residence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, will go on display beginning Oct. 18.
Isiah Warner ,
a professor of analytical and environmental chemistry at Louisiana State University, has won a $1 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to develop a program to strengthen math and science education for minorities. The mentor-based program would benefit students in high school and college. Warner, who received a Presidential Medal for Mentoring in 1997, was one of 20 teachers chosen for the grant from a national search.
Patricia Clarkson ,
a New Orleans native and daughter of District C City Councilmember Jackie Clarkson, last week won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her appearance as Sara O'Connor in HBO's Six Feet Under. Clarkson will also appear in several upcoming films, including two (The Safety of Objects and Welcome to Collinwood) showing at next month's New Orleans Film Festival.
