Ellen DeGeneres,
actress, comedian, talk-show host and New Orleans native, led the talk-show pack this year with 12 Daytime Emmy nominations for her new show. A hit for NBC in its first year, The Ellen DeGeneres Show received nods in the Outstanding Talk Show, Talk Show Host, Special Class Writing, and Talk Show Direction categories, plus a slew of technical and design nominations.
U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La.,
voted to end the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, saying she didn't think outlawing high-firepower weapons -- such as the UZIs and AK-47s common in drive-by shootings -- would have much of an impact in crime prevention. Her reasoning is contradicted by major law enforcement groups who support the ban, and common sense that says there is no legitimate use in society for such weapons.
John Roberts
reached a low point in his campaign for Jefferson Parish School Board District 1 when he attempted to co-opt Gambit Weekly's endorsement of his opponent, Mark Morgan. Using deceptive editing, Roberts' campaign sent out a mailing that exploited an error in Gambit Weekly's endorsement of Morgan. Such misbehavior demonstrates that Roberts would both be an unfit choice for a school board and a bad role model for schoolchildren.
