The Best and the Worst of the Week 

Louisiana's Office of Public Health
was one of six state agencies nationwide to merit the highest status in bioterrorism preparedness as ranked by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC said Louisiana achieved six out of 10 major indicators that assess a state's ability to respond to a bioterrorism threat. State health officials say they are committed to improving the remaining indicators.

2004 Pro Bono Project award winners,
recognized for their outstanding volunteer work providing legal assistance for disadvantaged clients, include the law firm of Krebs, Farley & Pelleteri; attorneys Darlene Bewley, Meredith Cunningham, E. Phelps Gay and C. Peck Hayne; corporate partner Franklin Southland Printing Co.; paralegal Bradley D. Gowland, Jr.; U.S. District Judge Jay Zainey; and 'Friend of Pro Bono' Elwood Cahill Jr.

Chase Montague Markovich and Uma Jyothi Nagendra,
high school students from New Orleans, have been selected to participate in the prestigious 2005 ARTS Week in Miami, Fla., this month. Markovich, of Jesuit High School, was chosen in the Photography category; Nagendra, of the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, was a Poetry category winner. Their works will be entered in a national competition for cash awards and scholarships.

Marc Brown,
creator of the children's book series Arthur Adventures, came to New Orleans last month to pass out Arthur books to an assembly of local children at the Rosa Keller branch of the New Orleans Public Library. Brown also brought books to Little Woods Elementary School. Arthur publisher Little, Brown for Young Readers donated the books to Feed The Children, which coordinated the local events.
