The Best and the Worst of the Week

The Tulane Paint
Rally for New Orleans Public Schools is seeking volunteers to spruce up the city's surviving public schools. Several schools are scheduled to reopen next week, and the rally is working at its first post-Katrina location — Alice Harte Elementary in Algiers. The rally works with the Tulane Alumni Association, the Tulane Office of Student Programs, and the Community Action Council of Tulane University Students (CACTUS). To volunteer, call (504) 858-9055.

AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA)
recently awarded a $25,000 grant to the NO/AIDS Task Force so that the local nonprofit can continue to offer a wide array of critical and compassionate services to people affected and infected by HIV and AIDS in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Each year some of the money raised at AIDS Walk Los Angeles helps underwrite grants to AIDS service organizations in Los Angeles County. This year, APLA chose to award grants to three agencies in Katrina-impacted areas as well, including NO/AIDS.

Seven state representatives
used a parliamentary trick to try to cover their butts after voting against — or not being present to support — a bill to consolidate local levee boards. The consolidation bill lost by a House vote of 51-38 two weeks ago, but the official record now shows the vote was 47-45 after several lawmakers asked to change their "no" votes or to record themselves as voting "yes" after being absent when the vote was actually taken. Switching from "no" to "yes" were Reps. Juan LaFonta of New Orleans, Donald Cravins Jr. of Opelousas, Cedric Glover of Shreveport, and Eric LaFleur of Ville Platte. Previously absent Reps. Don Cazayoux of New Roads, William Daniel IV of Baton Rouge and Jalila Jefferson-Bullock of New Orleans belatedly recorded themselves as voting for the measure.
