The Best and the Worst of the Week

Carolinas MED-1,
based at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C., joined more than a dozen local public health care providers to open a self-contained emergency department in New Orleans for two weeks, including the Mardi Gras holidays. The MED-1 mobile hospital provided critically needed medical support and prevented area emergency rooms from being overwhelmed during the time of the city's highest population since Katrina.

Los Hombres Calientes,
the popular and prolific Latin jazz group led by trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and drummer Bill Summers, was recently nominated for Billboard's 2006 Latin Jazz Album of the Year for the album Los Hombres Calientes Volume 5: Carnival (2005). The winner of this prestigious international award will be unveiled on April 27 and broadcast live on Telemundo. Previous albums by the group were honored by Billboard , and one was nominated for a Grammy.

Food Network and Chef Emeril Lagasse
teamed up for a TV special called Bringing Back the Bayou this past Saturday (March 11). Hosted by Lagasse, it featured top New Orleans restaurateurs and chefs including Ella Brennan, Ted Brennan, Leah Chase, Colette Guste, Ti Martin, Paul Prudhomme, Lazone Randolph and Melvin Rodrigue. The program helped get the word out that at least one aspect of local life and culture — our unique cuisine — remains constant, and that many of our great restaurants are back as well.

Kimberly Williamson Butler,
the embattled clerk of Criminal District Court, demeaned the work and legacies of the world's great civil rights leaders when she compared herself to Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi upon her release from prison for contempt of court charges. The persons Butler invoked were jailed in the cause of promoting human dignity and the rights of others — not for promoting themselves politically or for dissing lawful authority for the sake of personal aggrandizement.
