The Best and the Worst of the Week 

Dr. David G. Kline,
a Boyd Professor of Medicine at LSU Medical Center, has won the 2006 Cushing Medal, the highest honor granted by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). Given annually since 1977, the award recognizes an AANS member for distinguished service in the field of neurosurgery. A native of Philadelphia, Kline received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and spent two and a half years at Walter Reed General Hospital. He has been on the staff of LSU School of Medicine since 1967.

Skyfire Theatre in Covington
has presented a check for more than $1,200 to Habitat for Humanity after an Òaudience-interactiveÓ run of The Queen of Bingo , starring Becky Allen and Sandy Bravender, raised money for the housing charity last December. During the Ògame,Ó audience members were encouraged to purchase pull-tabs, with the proceeds going to Habitat for Humanity. Skyfire recently invited Habitat representatives to attend a production of É And the Ball and All to receive the donation from Allen.

in releasing the long-awaited standards for building houses in flood-plain areas, invoked a Ò3 feet above gradeÓ mark. While the new standards discourage slab homes built at street level because of their vulnerability to flooding, the standards acknowledge that the onus should be on safer levees more than higher-built homes to protect the area.

Gerald Jenkins,
former commander of a drug task force and an Iberville Parish sheriffÕs deputy for 20 years, was sentenced to 35 years in prison last week for stealing money and drugs from an evidence room and then trying to burn the building where they were kept. The 43-year-old Jenkins, who committed the crimes with his cousin Joseph Jenkins, pleaded guilty to possessing more than 400 grams of cocaine, attempted simple arson and obstruction of justice. Joseph Jenkins has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for the crimes.
