The Best and the Worst of the Week

Brown-Forman Corporation,
parent company of Southern Comfort, has donated $30,000 to a pair of local music-related Katrina charities — New Orleans Habitat for Humanity Musicians' Village and the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund — through the SoCo Music Fund. The two charities will split the donation, which was made in memory of Lou Giglio, a longtime New Orleans resident and brand ambassador for Southern Comfort. Giglio died earlier this year.

The Sugar Bowl Committee
has donated $800,000 to the City Park Improvement Association for the continued restoration and maintenance of Tad Gormley Stadium and two adjoining athletic areas. The area that comprises Tad Gormley, the practice track and the softball field will be renamed The Sugar Bowl Athletic Complex. Portions of the $800,000 came from Atlanta hotels during the 2006 Sugar Bowl. The annual game was played in Atlanta after Katrina — the only time the game was ever played outside of Louisiana.

Entergy
recently presented Teach For America a check for $150,000 to help the nonprofit recruit teachers and expand educational equity in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. Teach For America enlists recent college graduates who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. Entergy made the presentation at the Green Charter School in New Orleans. The donation was made by the Entergy Charitable Foundation.

Zurich Financial Services
donated 220 gift cards worth $100 apiece to families in need through the Fore!Kids Foundation. The families, identified through the Fore!Kids Foundation network of charitable recipients, were given the gift cards on behalf of the PGA TOUR players. In addition, Ty, a leader in plush toys, donated 220 PGA TOUR Teddy Bears that were handed out to the Fore!Kids families. Zurich remains the annual sponsor of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans golf tournament each spring.
