The Best and the Worst of the Week

Coca-Cola
donated $150,000 and the volunteer efforts of more than 250 of its employees toward the restoration of Wesley Barrow Stadium, the baseball field in Pontchartrain Park. Coke employees cleaned, painted and repaired the stadium, which was damaged during Hurricane Katrina. Before the storm, Wesley Barrow served as the primary site for the city's Little League teams as well as for local high school baseball games. Friends of New Orelans Recreation Department received $100,000 of the company's $150,000 donation.

Nike and Wilson Sporting
donated boys' basketball sneakers and girls' sports bags to NORD for free distribution to area youth last week as part of NORD's 2007 basketball program, headquartered at St. Bernard Recreation Center. The basketball program is available to boys and girls ages 6 to 16, and the girls' league is assisted by the LSU Lady Tigers basketball team. The donations from Nike, Wilson and others help NORD recover from Hurricane Katrina, after which NORD received only minimal assistance from FEMA.

The Student Hurricane Network,
a national association of law students, will bring 500 law students from 28 schools nationwide to Louisiana and Mississippi during their winter breaks to help individuals and communities recover from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The network will match students with legal nonprofits for a week as students help address hurricane survivors' pressing legal problems, ranging from criminal justice, housing, workers' rights, government benefits and environmental justice.

State Sen. C.D. Jones
of Monroe, who chairs the Senate committee that oversees ethics legislation, was fined $5,000 by the Louisiana Board of Ethics for failing to properly report his work as an attorney for three housing developments that sought tax credits from a state housing agency. State law requires elected officials who do work for government agencies to file notice with the ethics board within 10 days of the work. A legislator for more than 25 years, Jones has received previous fines for late financial reports and conflicts of interest.
